Staying abroad

We encourage you to study abroad for at least one semester; we recommend a semester in which you primarily take elective courses (i.e. fifth semester in the Bachelor's degree, the first three semesters in the Master's degree CS, the second and third semesters in Data Science) – but you can also go abroad during another semester.

We will gladly advise you on the possibility of recognition of credits before your stay. Usually, elective modules are completed abroad; in particular, recognition of computer science modules for which there is no direct equivalent at HHU is also possible by arrangement.

HHU has a number of partner universities where you can study without paying tuition fees. When making your plans, please note that the semester times of the foreign universities may differ from ours. If there are overlaps with our examination periods, an individual solution can usually be found.

You are always free to study at a foreign university of your choice on a self-organised basis. Information on possible scholarships (apart from the Erasmus scholarship) and AuslandsBAföG can be found here.

Depending on where you want to study, you will find more detailed information below:

Would you like to study abroad in Europe for one or two semesters within an organised framework? Would you like the chance to receive a scholarship? Then the Erasmus+ international exchange programme could be just right for you. Hier you can find detailed information about the Erasmus study programme and how to apply.

The Computer Science department itself has no partner universities outside Europe, but HHU does have centralised partnerships outside Europe. Applications for these partner places are made centrally via the International Office. The Erasmus coordinator for Computer Science can advise you on recognition possibilities.

It is always possible to look for a foreign university at which you would like to study in a completely self-organised manner. We can advise you on recognition possibilities. We have received reports from a few “freemovers”. The International Office offers advice on organising such a stay yourself.

During or directly after your studies, you can receive a scholarship for an internship with a foreign company in the Erasmus region. You can apply via the International Office. Important: The application must be made while you are enrolled.

An internship in the field of computer science can be recognised in the Bachelor PO 21 in the ungraded elective area (max. 5 CP, 1 CP = 30 hours).

You are studying at a foreign institution in the Erasmus area and want to study one or two semesters of Computer Science (Bachelor de, Master en/de) or Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (Master en) at HHU? If an Erasmus partnership exists with us, this is no problem; contact your Erasmus coordinator at your home university directly. If no partnership exists yet, you are welcome to establish a new cooperation agreement with us; please contact your Erasmus coordinator.

Short stays at Erasmus partner universities for training or teaching purposes are possible within the framework of staff mobility.
