PhD student and PostDoc positions

  • PhD position in biological Physics – We are searching for someone with a background in physics or a related discipline. Your project will be to develop models of biological systems (cells and/or organisms) based on physical and chemical laws, with a particular focus on thermodynamics.

  • Dr Adélaïde Raguin and Prof. Zoya Ignatova (University of Hamburg) are seeking to strengthen their collaboration with a person who holds a Master or equivalent degree in Molecular Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biological Chemistry or equivalent, to pursue a PhD as a part of the following project:

    EtransColi: A multidisciplinary study of Escherichia coli ’s trans-translation
    regulation under stress conditions


    The project is on the interface of quantitative biology, molecular biology, and computational biophysics to assess crucial questions on how bacteria alter translation to mitigate stress using cell-wide high-throughput approaches (e.g. RNA-Seq, Ribo-Seq, qPCR, and microarray techniques). During the PhD, you will be developing tailored experimental approaches to address translation alterations in stress. While you will collect experimental data in the laboratory of Prof. Ignatova, their analysis will be done applying the innovative approaches from the group of Dr Raguin. You will thereby be embedded in a highly interdisciplinary team of theoreticians and experimentalists, and thus have the unique opportunity to interact with wet lab and computer scientists.

  • Dr Adélaïde Raguin is seeking to hire a postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in stochastic simulations and the programming language C++, to be part of the project:

    Impact of drought on the secondary cell wall of poplar xylem, a multi-disciplinary approach

    The project is on the interface of computational physics and quantitative biology to model plant cell wall molecular synthesis and water transport properties. During the postdoctoral project, you will be developing tailored computational approaches based on advanced stochastic simulations in C++, possibly complemented by Molecular Dynamics and Mechanobiology. While you will develop your research in my group, you will also collaborate with experimentalist partners at the Research Center of Jülich, and be part of the interdisciplinary Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences (CEPLAS), that funds the position. As a CEPLAS postdoc you will benefit from unique training, networking, and career development opportunities.

    Start date: January 1st, 2023 (earlier start is possible)
